WAT007 – Secrets of the Rainbow (i.e. Spiritual Philosophical Deep Shit)
I have a LOT of deep thoughts about a lot of topics but find that most people I know don’t really care to think that deeply about things. That’s not meant to be an insult to anyone as if I’m saying that all my friends are shallow. Rather, I’m saying that most of my friends express to me that the daily grind of work and life makes them have to think enough already so when they come home, the last thing they want to do is think some more. And so, when I set about sharing my thoughts on a deep topic like today, I know that the majority of my friends won’t be interested in engaging in a deep philosophical discussion about it. Because of that, I’m always stuck asking myself how much or how little detail do I provide in a blog post that I’m fairly certain won’t generate discussion anyway. The answer to this question, says a friend of mine, is to write for me and not others. I’ll do my best at that today.
Today’s blog post almost feels like one massive side tangent about my personal thoughts on rainbows. Some of it relates to the book I’ve been reviewing “The Watchers: Lost Secrets of Ascension, Resurrection and Perfection” by William Henry and the rest of it is a bunch of random thoughts I’ve accumulated over the years about rainbows as I’ve transitioned from a western theological mindset to more of an eastern esoteric (or even Gnostic) mindset. All of this is likely going to sound to you like I’m completely pulling it out of my own ass but I assure you there is more sound logic and historical basis behind this than meets the eye.
As you may remember, the author of the book I’m reviewing is making the assertion that the Biblical “Watchers” are Seraphim angels and that the Seraphim were depicted as serpent like beings that also had the appearance of burning white hot light and sometimes were described as having rainbow bodies. I’m not going to cover all the ways in which the author tries to prove this but some of it was QUITE fascinating. Rather, I’m going to take just a few things he’s said and run…. nay SPRINT…. to one giant cluster of random thoughts. And, I’ll warn you, this is almost entirely a PERSONAL philosophical rant.
The author explains how our modern understanding of light and color began with Newton (1642-1726) and a series of experiments he conducted with a prism. When white light is refracted through a prism, it was discovered, the light separates into it’s component colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. Before Newton, the author suggested, nobody really knew or understood that visible light was made up of seven different colors. Further, the author points out, to prove the prism wasn’t just “coloring” the light, Newton used a second prism to refract and bend the seven colors of light back together again and produce a pure white light from the rainbow.
And herein lies a GREAT mystery, I believe. Namely, that within our visible white light there exist simultaneously seven other “divisions” of light or color that are imperceptible and indistinguishable to the naked eye. In other words, when you see “white light” you are ACTUALLY seeing red light, orange light, yellow light, green light, blue light and violet light simultaneously but you only PERCEIVE it as white light (not as the distinct colors that make up that light).
I believe this metaphor serves well to explain how I believe our material/physical universe works as well. What we PERCEIVE with our eyes, ears and senses, is just the cumulative effect of many different layers of light, sound, and vibration. We perceive another human being as physical and existing in the body we see them in now but in reality that person also exists in many different divisions or layers of reality simultaneously. You can only PERCEIVE the cumulative effect of what they are and do not see the component divisions that make up the other part of a “human being” such as their “higher self” or “subconscious”.
Stepping back to the light analogy for a moment, each color on the spectrum is a frequency of vibration that is visible to the human eye. The top of the spectrum (violet light) vibrates at a frequency of 380-450 nanometers for example while the bottom of the spectrum (red light) vibrates at the frequency of 700 nanometers. This range of frequency (400 nanometers to 700 nanometers) is referred to as “visible light” because humans can see it with the naked eye. However, light can and does exist outside of this frequency range as well. For example, Infrared light vibrates at a frequency of between 780 nanometers and 1 micrometer. We cannot see it with our naked eye but that does not mean the light is not there. With special goggles or visual apparatus, humans can see infrared light such as the beam of light that comes out of your television remote and strikes a sensor on the television making it respond or turn on.
I have long believed that other beings or entities exist in higher and lower frequencies than can be detected or perceived by the naked eye (or human ear). Is it such a stretch to believe that some entities can phase into and out of our visible spectrum by lowering or raising it’s vibration so as to become visible to us? If so, I believe this is exactly how “angels” or “watchers” are said to “come down” to our material plane. These entities or beings exist at a higher or lower frequency than can be perceived by our human senses and thus they appear invisible to us. However, at least some of these beings or entities have the ability to change their vibration or frequency such that they can become visible or be heard within the spectrum of human hearing, etc.
I also think there is a mystery here to learn in the matter of music. We are familiar with the term “Octave” for example. We know that an “octave” contains 8 notes, HOWEVER, the 8th note is the same as the first note only at twice the vibrational frequency of the first. So then, an octave is really 7 discrete notes followed by the repetition of the first note again at twice the vibrational frequency as the first. As an example the notes A->B->C->D->E->F->G->A collectively together is an octave but only contains 7 discrete notes with one being doubled in frequency. Also C->D->E->F->G->A->B->C is also an octave. The eighth note is always twice that of the first note. Therein lies another mystery I feel. What if there are beings, entities, consciousness, or whatever you want to call it living at the vibration of A on a musical scale but also different entities, creatures consciousness at the vibration of B on a musical scale and so on? And what if, every 8th “note” or dimension of existence, those on the 8th “note” are essentially the same as those on the first note only at twice the vibrational frequency?
I find it no mere coincidence that in eastern philosophy, each human being is said to be comprised of seven discrete energy centers or “chakras” and that each of these are understood to be the seven discrete colors of the rainbow (or pure white light). To reach “ascension”, spiritually speaking, one must move through the seven centers or chakras of energy and past the violet or uppermost color on the visible spectrum. IF this is like unto music, what happens at the next level is a new form of awareness beginning at the first “note” again. In other words, you become a new being but at a higher vibrational level that starts at double the vibrational level you were previously.
In all kinds of cultures and mythologies around the world, the rainbow is depicted as a sort of bridge or gateway to the gods. In norse mythology for example. the rainbow is a bridge between the realms of gods and men. This bridge is also often depicted in various cultures as a ladder in which man can climb or ascend into the heavens. In the Bible, Jacob sees a ladder with angels ascending and descending upon it. Could this have been a way to represent how angels can change their vibrational frequency to descend through the discrete layers of “reality”? Likewise does a human have to rise up through the 7 discrete colors of the rainbow to attain the pure white ‘light of heaven”?
The author of the book I have been reviewing regarding the watchers points out the many reasons he believes that the watchers were the same as the Biblical Seraphim angels which were depicted as serpents and described as having rainbow bodies. It also makes me think of the ancient Aztecs and their famous rainbow serpent Quetzalcoatl.
The author also makes a very interesting and long winded explanation why he believes that Adam (or the first “man”) was originally a being of white light himself. He uses some fascinating extra biblical sources to show how Adam was “divided” by his maker (or split at some point much like a prism divides light) thereby removing his light body. In the accepted biblical cannon we are told that Eve was created from a rib of Adam and thus was taken out of him. This in essence divided Adam so he no longer had all seven parts needed to be a complete being of light.
Additionally, the author makes an interesting observation about the creation story that I never caught before. If you recall, after the “fall,” Adam and Eve were both suddenly aware of and ashamed of their nakedness and thus hid their privates behind leaves or plants. When God saw this and asked, “Who told you you were naked?” he then made for them “garments of skin”. I never really thought about this before but do we infer then that God went out and killed and skinned some animals for Adam and Eve to make them clothes? Or is there something else going on?
The author suggests that these “garments of skin” literally refers to the physical outer skin of our bodies. Before that, we were light beings without the need of a “skin suit”. However, being separated and divided, man lost his form as a “being of light” and was soon after encased in a “skin” or garment that is our physical bodies. That body and “garment” of skin is perishable and will die as it is imperfect. Just as our modern day clothing wears out and must be replaced, so too does our physical skin wear out and need to be replaced. But there in lies a secret! Just as the human does not cease to exist when he or she buys a new set of clothes, so too perhaps the “being of light” does not cease to exist when his physical skin or body gives out.
In the Gnostic account of Creation, The Apocalypse of Adam, (as I understand it from my reading), it is said that there were other light beings who were jealous or pissed off that the newly created light being (Adam) was more important or powerful in some way than they were. To “fix” the problem, the creator divided Adam (removing from him the feminine aspect) thus weakening him and making him inferior. One of the light beings (known in Gnosticism as the illuminator) informed Adam and Eve that they were indeed light beings “like the gods” (or other light beings) and revealed to them the knowledge of how they were divided and weakened. Again, this is my interpretation of the writings. If you are interested, the Apocalypse of Adam is available online in an English translation for free.
So, if Adam (or human beings) were original beings of light, it is interesting to note that there are indications in the Bible itself that people can be “transfigured” into beings of light once again. Jesus, for example, was transfigured into a being of light in the New Testament and we are told that at the resurrection that in the twinkling of an eye we will put on new “clothes” and shed our old “clothes”. Could it be that the old “clothes” are the “garments of skin” that God created for us in the garden? Is the new clothes, therefore, simply restoring our original light bodies once again that are imperishable?
51 Look, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die,[a] but we will all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality.
1 Corinthians 15:51-53, NRSVUE
Is it therefore possible we humans were before, and always have been, beings of light? Have we only been temporarily encased in this “garment of skin” for the time being until we learn how to ascend and be re-united with our split off parts to form a being of complete “white” light again?
It is a slight but SIGNIFICANT change from the traditional Christian understanding for Christians typically believe that man is created mortal, having no existence prior to being “born” and that the “gift” of god is immortality. However, the understanding of the Gnostics was (and remains) that we have always been and are all STILL light beings but that we are temporarily encased in a “garment of skin” and have forgotten our true nature. This skin is an illusion. It is not the real “you”. The light being that you are is simply divided (due to “sin” perhaps) and will once again be returned to fullness.
Just random thoughts.
